    dinner / diner /

    Dear teachers,

Today early morning I noted a very interesting for me pun in a NYT’s article “36 Hours in San Diegonamely “DINNER AT A DINER“. It brought the following to my mind.

“The travelers paid just one “dinar” (a monetary unit in Yogoslavia) for “dinner” (a meal eaten late in the day) in a small diner (an inexpensive restaurant).

dinner (n) = the meal of the day served in the evening or at midday.
diner (n) = one that dine, a person eating a meal (especially in a restaurant)
diner (n) = a small, usually inexpensive restaurant with a long counter and booths and housed in a building designed to resembled a dining car

Would you be kind enough to tell me your opinion concerning the present findings?

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

What do you mean by "the present findings"?
On what do you want us to express our opinions?

    Hi 2006,

It was found that my original post above is an abortive attempt to show my sense of humor.

In response to your questions I will try to throw light upon my wording in the mentioned above unfortunate post.

present findings = present discovery (uncovering), conclusion

I am intrigued by your attitude towards the adduced of me wag pun: dinar, dinner, diner.

pun = play on words, sometimes on different senses of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words.

    Regards,

    V.

Unfortunately there is no pun as the three words do not sound the same. Good try, though.

I would admit that as being a pun; it is a play on words if you think it is, even if others don't want to play along.
Frankly though, for a native speaker, it's a bit too obvious and there's not the element of unexpected humour that a good pun (or even a bad one) needs. That's my opinion. But do try again!
