    statement

    Hello,
    The following passage is from "The guardian weekly";
The text is about new "extreme education" system in US.
Mr Verrilli vehemently denies any suggestions that his students might not be the most needy.
"It's a prejudice to say that parents from disadvantaged backgrounds don't care about their kids' education. 95% of parents just want a better education for their children. We're not creaming.
    ........
The question is if the statemt is true or false (according to the text):

In the US, statistics show that 95% of parents want a better education for their children.

I think it is false. I have no time now to explain why but I'm going to say why I think it's false.

    Cheers,

    Re: statement

    According to the affirmitive sentence

95% of parents just want a better education for their children.

I would say that the statement

In the US, statistics show that 95% of parents want a better education for their children.

    is true

    I am not a teacher.

I think it's false. At least there's no evidence from the passage that the 95% came from
anywhere but out of Mr. Verrilli's ... I mean from the top of his head.

    Good point.

Perhaps it is, for lack of a better term, statistics rhetoric.

    Re: statement

    What a bizarre question!

You'd have to answer with a "Yes, if Mr. Verrilli is speaking factually."

But even then, is Mr. V talking about the parents of children from disadvantaged backgrounds only, or all parents?

    Hello,
    Thank you all,
    What a bizarre question!

You'd have to answer with a "Yes, if Mr. Verrilli is speaking factually."

But even then, is Mr. V talking about the parents of children from disadvantaged backgrounds only, or all parents?
    That is exactly I thought.

    My reasoning was as follows:
If Mr. Verrilli is speaking factually then to support statement about the parents from disadvantaged backround he have to use statistics about them; so it's not about all parents in US.

    Am I right ?
    cheers,
