    before hesitating

    Dear Teachers,

I read this from The Choice by Nicholas Sparks:

Travis rose from the table, angling for an escape. "Anyone need another beer?"

Joe and Laird lifted their bottles in unison; the others shook their heads. Travis started for the cooler before hesitating near the sliding glass door of his house. He darted inside and changed the CD...

Does "before hesitating" imply that Travis didn't hesitate to grab the beers or it is saying that Travis actually hesitated (maybe about if he should changed the CD)?

It means: He started walking towards the cooler. Then he hesitated. Then he darted inside.
There's nothing in the text you've given to explain why he hesitated.
