Grammer - Present perfect & present tenses

In my case, English is a complusory subject at school so if I was asked why I learned English, I'd just say because English is a complusory subject at school.

I was writing to my Internet friends who learn English too in Japan and Taiwan as well. Therefore, I figure they must have asked 'why you learn English before.' in indirect speech.

Is it better if I put 'before' after 'asked', and "why you learn English" remains unchanged?

"Why you learn English?" is incorrect.
"Why do you learn English?" OK
"Why are you learning English?" Best
"I figure they must have asked 'Why are you learning English?' before."
"I figure they must have asked other people 'Why are you learning English?' "
