Post Bethany was born in a home water- birth in March 1996

From The case for co-sleeping | Life and style | The Guardian

In the text below, what do the words in bold mean?

Bethany was born in a home water- birth in March 1996 and a few hours later Veronika and Paul took her into bed with them. "She slept with us from then on. We had an independent midwife so there was no one to tell us not to or be disapproving."

This refers to the birth of a child, that occured at home; it appears to have occured under the supervision of a "mid-wife" (someone who helps with childbirth). The term "water-birth" is a method that uses water to simulate an extension of the womb as the child is born.

By the way, in the UK an independant mid-wife is a qualified and licenced medical practitioner in childbirth.

And despite the use of the word "wife", they can be either men or women. The word has become neuter.
