    Smile union machinist=?

She was a newspaper editor. And he was a union machinist.
Hi! This is about the US.

What is 'union machinist'? I understood 'machinist' but not 'union'.

    Thanks!

    Re: union machinist=?

He belongs to a labor union. A union machinist is considered a "blue collar" job, but on the other hand, any union job pays the best wages and has the best benefits (medical insurance, holiday pay, etc.). In the example you gave, the implication is that the newspaper editor has a more prestigious job than the machinist, since he works in a factory and gets his hands dirty. But in real life, a union machinist probably makes much more money than an editor.
