Why are the roots of "in the drivers seat" only traced back to the 20th century?

    Re: Idioms

Probably because it is the 20th century that the motorised vehicle became common, in which the driver had a seat to himself.

Horse-drawn vehicles had benches on which the driver sat, and which would be shared with others.
