    news headlines

What do these news headlines mean? Especially I don't understand the underlined words:

    1. DETECTIVES PROBE FAKE NOTES LINK

    2. COP IN CAR CHASE DRAMA

It's a feature of newspaper headlines that they often use short words, and they use words that are grammatically ambiguous (four of the five words in 1 may be either nouns or verbs). This second feature means that there are often several ways of fitting grammar to the words, giving them a different meaning - for example, either the link or the notes could be fake, or [for the sake of argument - this is an extremely improbable interpretation] the 'detectives probe' could be an investigation of detectives and they might be involved in faking a link [="connection'"] between notes...

At a guess I would expect that 1 means '[Police] detectives are in the process of investigating a [possible] link between bank-notes that are fake', and that 2 means 'A policeman [has been involved] in a dramatic [=eventful/spectacular/impressive] car chase'. But the only way of knowing for certain is to read the articles (which, after all, is what headlines are designed to make you do).
