    Is 'a' good in the following sentence?

    A fruit salad goes well with ice-cream.

    It looks good to me; however the sentence would also be fine without the Article.

    When you hear 'a fruit salad', do you have a picture of some container in your mind's eye?

    'fruit salad' is made of chunks of fruit, such as peaches, pears, and pineapple, with a few grapes and cherries, as sold in tins, or served at table in a large serving bowl. The fruit salad is ladled out into individual dishes (this is usually at home and a family meal; or at a buffet) and served with a scoop of ice-cream.

    'a fruit salad' suggest a serving on an individual flat plate (as opposed to an individual desert bowl) with a petite bunch of grapes, some orange segments, a few slices of kiwi fruit, and maybe a small chunk of pineapple or melon, perhaps with a garnish of some kind, served as an alternative to a regular high-sugar/high fat desert (particularly on cruise ships.)
