    To a native speaker, either will do, but "has" is more usual since "The US" and "America" are pretty much the same thing and refer to a country.

    Use either - few people will object.

    It's a bit like "The team has/have played well". Either is acceptable, although grammatically a team is singular and therefore takes "has".

    I don't think that making it clear to learners that "The United States" and "team" are both singular while 'team members' and 'players' are both plural is being impossibly pedantic.
