    use a break

    Dear Teachers,

I read this from The Next Thing on My List by Jill Smolinski:

"You could take her to movies. Play with makeup....She's a sweet girl who could use a break."

What does "use a break" mean?

    Re: use a break

It's an idiom. 'It would be appropriate if she had a bit of good luck.'

    Re: use a break

Afterthought: In Br. English one would be more likely to say 'she could do with...' rather than 'she could use...'; although Br E. speakers do sometimes use "she could use" in this way, I think they are knowingly copying a usage that they first heard maybe during WWII, when US servicemen were stationed in the UK. (In the same way I use the expression "I guess" in a way that reflects the American singers I heard on my big brother's 78s in the early '50s.)
