    swimming against

    Yes - possibly more commonly used.

    in my language we have an idiom that could be translated as "to paddle against the tide". do you have something similar to this, apart from the one previously posted?

    We have the idiom in that form too.

    Other forms:

    "Swimming against the stream"
    "Beating against the wind" [comes from sailing]
