    Please give me the correct usage. If I were president or If I was president?

    Were is correct; however it is not uncommon to see or hear was.

    I certainly wouldn't call was incorrect, but it is important to realise that were is also possible.

    If I were president, I would reduce taxes.

    Were expresses the subjunctive mood which indicates the hypothetical nature of the sentence.
