A lot can be used instead of many: A lot of people hate writing letters; Many people hate writing letters.

It is two words: the indefinite article [a] and a noun [lot], and as a collocation requires "of" to complete it : A lot of....

"A lot" is the correct spelling, bot the phrase usually includes "of".

A native speaker pretty much uses " a lot of " for either "much" or "many", but this depends on the context.

We say," I have a lot of (or many) friends".
and "There was a lot of ( or much ) moaning at the meeting".

Having said that, "a lot of" is probably used more often in place of "many" than "much".

You can't use "a lot of" when you use "too".
i.e. You can only say "too many people "or too much money"

As has been suggested, "a lot" can be used with both countable and noncountable nouns, and even without nouns.
We have (a lot)(much) to be thankful for.

"much" is used with noncountable nouns and "many" is used with countable nouns. Other examples...
    We have too much trouble.
    We have too many problems.
