    How are things down under?

Is it the same as 'How are you'?
    Why 'down under'?

Without context, but probably "down under" = Australia

    How are things in Australia?

Australian English is pretty "odd", no offense, of course, but it's a little different from many out there, when one compares British and American English, it's possible to find things easy.

All can understand that "country" or "countryside" mean, rural areas, rivers, animals, small cities, however, Australians call it "outback", when I first saw this word I started guessing, what does it mean, maybe something that is out and back at the same time, well, it makes sense when someone tells you it is related to not so populated areas.

The word outback is used generally to refer to areas outside of cities and towns, but in a strict sense it doesn't refer to typical rural/countryside areas: it refers to very remote, unpopulated areas.

There is an equivalant word used in the U.S and U.K: the backcountry.
