    Question prepositions 'in' and 'on'

Hello, if a book is sitting on an armchair, is it correct to say:

The book is on the armchair
    or
The book is in the armchair
    or
    both?

(This was a question in a test, and the teacher insisted that the preposition should have been 'in')

    Thank you.

    Both could be correct.

Whether the book is sitting on the arm of the armchair, or on the cushioned seat, it is 'on'

    People sit 'in' armchairs.

If the book were 'in the armchair', it would imply it is hidden within the stuffing - (the stuffing or whatever filling is used is covered by upholstery).

    Thank you both.

My answer was the same with David's. But, now I have two contradictory answers from two native speakers, I'm more confused.

Don't be confused, the simple truth is that David L is right but you will hear native English speakers saying both. Not all native speakers speak 'correct' English. (That's why I said 'could be'.)
