    I can't see you tonight, I have a lot of work and i have to stay in late

    stay in- stay at home or stay at work? or it doesn't say?

    The sentence makes more sense without the "in".

    ".........I have to stay late."

    In that case, it would mean "stay at work".

    It makes sense also without the "late" (but with the "in").

    ".......I have to stay in".

    In that case, it would mean " stay in at home".

    I took it from the teaching materials prepared by one of language schools, so I guess it should be correct although it sounds strange to me, too.

    Every time my boss asked me to work some overtime, he went like:

    Will you stay on today?

    So, I personally think that stay in is preferred in reference to home.
