    Smile push vs push against

    I pushed the door.
    I pushed against the door.

    I knocked the door.
    I knock at the door.

What are the differences with and without prepositions?

    Thanks for the answer.

I pushed the door, but it stayed shut.
I pushed at the door, and it sung slowly open.

I knocked at the door, and waited for it to be opened.

    But
As I fell, I knocked the vase off the table. Just knocking, without a preposition, often does some damage.

This idea of knocking causing some damage extends to the metaphorical use: 'Don't knock it' (=don't expose it to hostile criticism)
