    scantiness

I would like to use the word scantiness but I am not sure how to use it:

    1. This study is about the scantiness of the traditional theories to define metonymy.
    2. This study is about the scantiness of the traditional theories in defining metonymy.

    Any other suggestions?

It sounds a bit strange. What is scanty? The theories? The definitions? The number of theories or definitions; the quantity of writing in the definitions.
I'm not sure about "Theories to define" something". A definition of something is usually a very small part of a theory.
What do you mean in simpler words first?
