    I like Michael Swan's Practical English Usage (Oxford).

    Smile Re: what book can I buy?

    I personally think you should NOT buy textbooks whether you're not fluent. Grammar will hurt your learning process (language acquisition, as they say)!

    Ask yourself:

    Did I use textbook while I was 5?
    Of course not, nevertheless, I could talk to people, watch tv, play games, I had so much fun, there was no effort.

    Research has proofed languague acquisition for adults (any human being) should follow the same process when they were children:

    (1) **LISTEN** --> (2) talk --> (3) read --> (4) write

    Why do the mass (million of English students) can read but cannot talk or even understand what English native speakers say????

    Because they think before speaking... "should I use the present perfect tense?"
    ______

    BUT, whether you're ready, Tdol's suggestion is very good!

    Good luck!

    I also would suggest Babylon 7.
    it's a software that aids - a lot - who is willing to learn English.
    it provides word translation (dictionary), text translation (doesn't work well but sometimes gives you a clue that will take you to a higher level) and spoken pronunciation (works great).
    you just need to click on the selected word in the text to have its meaning and audible pronunciation.
    very handy.
