    enlarge , zoom

    Hi!
Could you clarify it for me?
What word should I use if I hope the word of the copy of the paper is bigger than original when I make a copy?
Is the word" enlarge"or " zoom"?
    My sentence is as follows:
I would like to make a copy for the paper. Also I want to enlarge/zoom the word in bold for 1 times.
Could you check it for me?
    Thanks a lot!

    Re: enlarge , zoom

Zoom refers to what you do, when you look at an object and then press some button to make it larger on your screen or viewfinder. For that reason, it is called a "zoom lens."

To enlarge, is to make the resultant OUTPUT (usually a print copy) larger than the original.

So therefore, you will want to "enlarge" the copy, not "zoom" it.

Now, I am troubled by "enlarge the word in bold for one times." I wonder if you mean, "I want to enlarge it by 100%" which would take a 2-inch word and render a resultant copy that was 4 inches? Even that is questionable, as some might say that 100% larger is the same as the original. So maybe you might want to say, "enlarge it to twice the orignal."

I, too, am often bewildered by this silly language!

That's what happens when countries who have adopted English play fast and loose with it: people no longer have a given set understanding, necessary for clear communication.

100% larger can only mean, twice the size.

    Re: enlarge , zoom

But something that was 2 inches square, if enlarged 100%, you agree would then be 4 inches square? If so, then it becomes FOUR times larger, not twice. It now has an area of 16 square inches, compared to its original area of 4 square inches.

    Hmmmm....
