    past simple and past progressive

Is it possible to use past simple instead of the past progressive in the following sentence in order to convey the same meaning?

'She was trying to follow the others' conversation while she was typing on her computer?'

    YES

The meanings are slightly different, to do with the speaker's perception of the situation.

Who wants to explain the difference?

I would like to know the difference, and should be grateful if someone would indicate it.
