    I had washed my car.

    Hello.

Is the sentence 'I had washed my car.' possible??

I thought that the past perfect tense should be used with the past tense. If not, it just becomes a past tense sentence.

For example 'I had washed my car but it rained a lot.'

Am i right?? I need some help. I really will appreciate it.

    Thanks.

YES to your statement in Bold

    In the sentence:
"I went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth."
...both actions are in the past, and the logical sequence of the actions shows the order in which they occurred.

    However, when I say:
"I was sad to sell my house, because I had lived there most of my life."
Past Perfect form of the verb is used with the simple past tense form of the verb to show that something occurred before another in the past.
I use the Past Perfect 'had lived' to show that while this action is reported in the sentence after the 'was' clause, the action of living in the house came before the 'sadness'.

Past Perfect can also be used in the first clause, before a clause in the simple past, even though the order in which the actions occur is the same as in the sentence. Look at these sentences:
"I had just finished washing my car when it rained."
"I had gone to the shop to buy a newspaper when all of a suddden this man in a mask came in brandishing(=wave or flourish something, especially a weapon, as a threat) a gun and said, 'Stick 'em up!'"

Note how the Past Perfect indicates that the action further in the past occurred over a period of time right up to the beginning of the second action.
