was wont to maintain = was wont to say

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am on the right way with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following brief excerpt from the Burroghs’ “The Lost Continent”?

Old Admiral Sanchez was wont to maintain that he could smell thirty, and the men of the first ship in which I sailed claimed that Coburn, the navigating officer, knew by name every wave along thirty from 60dN. to 60dS. However, I'd hate to vouch for this.
was wont to maintain = was wont to say

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

"He was wont to ..." is an old-fashioned term for "he had a habit of doing ... "
"He was wont to maintain .... " Maintain means to persevere, to keep on, to keep saying it/asserting it/not denying it.
So, both together, it indicates that it was a fairly permanent claim he was making, and kept making.
