I believe the second choice more closely coresponds to the boldface example.
The example speaks in general terms about tigers. If our response is "The tiger is a fierce animal" we are speaking in general terms as well. We are not pointing to one specific animal in a menagerie (if we were, I think we would have said "That tiger..." or "This tiger..." is a fierce animal).
I'll bet I get some disagreement on this point!
