    much/many

Which is correct and is 'for' needed?

    a) He studied (for) as many as three hours.
    b) He studied (for) as much as three hours.

    Many thanks.

    Re: much/many

This is actually not as straight-forward as you would like.

Three hourss is not too long to spend on that.
Those three hours we spent on that were the longest three hours of my life.

In the first, you think of the three hours as one unit. In the second, you are considering each hour individually.

How do you think of them in the question you asked? As one unit, or each hour individually?

Another way of putting it would be to say that (a) should be the correct answer but that it doesn't sound right.

So there must be an uncountable noun like "time" that hasn't been included: He studied for as much time as three hours.

It would be interesting to see what other native speakers think.
