    "How so?" in the first example is colloquial for "Why?"

    I do not recognize it in the second concept; perhaps it simply means "How can?"

    "How So Bright of Universe" - this means "How Very Bright ... " The "of" in there is archaic, but I can't find the original reference.

    B: How so?
    A: I guess I wasn't paying attention.
    In the above example "How so?" is used to mean "How did that happen?"
