How to refer to an animal

    Hello

I want to know how to refer to an animal.

Is it correct to say : He ate the food, when I mean the dog ate the food?

Example: A horse runs as fast as it can.
    Cat lick themselves to wash.

    I'm a bit confused.

Is it correct to say : He ate the food, when i mean the dog ate the food? if you know what sex the animal is, you can use 'he' and 'she'. Otherwise use 'it'.

example: A horse runs as fast as it can. Here you are not talking about one particular horse; you are talking about all horses. You can also say, 'horses run as fast as they can.'

cats lick themselves to wash. or 'cats wash by licking themselves.' (i prefer the second sentence)

    i'm a bit confused.
