    Given a score on something

I would be much grateful if you could tell me what the phrase which is underlined below means.

'Hospital clusters will be given a score on a case-mix index that will help determine funding."

Th departments are being assessed [say on a scale of 1 - 10 ], and the score is the level at which they are assessed for their case-mix.

And presumably 'on a case mix basis' means the scores will be weighted in some way to account for the mix of cases. Otherwise, if one of the criteria is 'whether a patient lives', a hospital that specializes in treating in-grown toenails would score better than a hospital that specializes in brain surgery.

I would like to ask what the "case-mix" is. Does it mean "to cluster cases into different categories"? Thanks again.

It probably means that the assessors look at how many conditions [chronic/acute/emergency/medicaL/surgical/psychotherapeutic] are being treated, and whether there are more in one category than in another.
