Question What is "yoyo" or "yoyoing"?

Hello! Could someone please tell me what "yoyo" or "yoyoing" is? Thanks!

I love Sharon no matter what her size. But, I can relate ot this weight problem thing. I have been a yoyo since highschool, it gets so frustrating. I'll keep trying if you will Sharon. In the past 2yrs. I have gained 25lbs. and can't seem to shake it this time.

Re: What is "yoyo" or "yoyoing"?

    Hello Daffs,

A yo-yo is a child's toy. It consists of a piece of twine, and two discs centrally joined with a spindle. The twine is attached to and wound round the spindle at one end, and to the child's finger at the other.

The trick is to make the yo-yo roll up and down the twine, and perform various gymnastics while so doing.

The image here is of the "back and forth" motion of the yo-yo. Thus Sharon's weight fluctuates violently. ("Yo-yoing" is the participial form of "to yo-yo".)

    Best wishes,

    MrP

It's the yo-yo that does the 'gymnastics', as this picture shows: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ational_1a.jpg

(The only gymnastics he's ever had anything to do with are the televised sort. )

Re: What is "yoyo" or "yoyoing"?

"Yo-yo" dieting is a common expression in AmE. It refers to someone who goes on a very strict diet for a period of time and loses a lot of weight. Then, eventually, they revert to their old eating habits and gain the weight back. After a period of time, they get their willpower back and start restricting their food intake and exercise furiously for a year, then they get tired of that regime and revert back to their old ways....and on and on.

Janet Jackson is a good example. She tends to gain a lot of weight when she's not working, then when it's time to go on tour she hires a personal trainer and dietician and slims down. Once the tour (and photo sessions) are over, we see pictures of her in the tabloids and it's obvious that she's gained 20 or more pounds. Yo-yo dieting is not a good idea; it can strain the heart and it messes up the body's metabolism.
