    put out the hit

    Hi everyone,

Can you tell me what i have to understand these sentences?

    - You killed the story, did not you?
    - I already put out the hit.

I can give you some clues about it. They fought each other in a party where a lot of reporters were. And after second sentence, they started to laugh.
These two are husband and wife.

    - You killed the story, did not you? (did you not?)
Means he stopped the story, prevented it from being printed. This is newspaper jargon.

    - I already put out the hit.
A "hit" is an order to kill
