    far-fetched

    Hi there,
I found this interesting word yesterday in a Web newspaper. I wonder if it's out of date or old-fashioned, or if I can use it freely.
    Thanks.

    Re: far-fetched

    Yes, it is still used.

Although the younger people would use "bogus."

    Re: far-fetched

    Hi,

According to dictionary.com this interesting word means "improbable; not naturally pertinent; being only remotely connected; forced; strained".

I got surprised with "forced", one of the dictionary's definitions. If I had to say "far-fetched" in Portuguese, "forced" (or "forcado") would be the first word that would come to my mind.

I wonder if the following sentence (or any sentence with "far-fetched") would actually work if I replaced "far-fetched" by "forced", please: "He brought in a far-fetched example in an effort to prove his point."

    Thanks!

    Re: far-fetched

That "forced" means reaching, or trying to make something what it is not.

The look of the room seemed forced with its fake fur pillows.

His accolades about his own son seemed forced.
