    Hi there,
What is the difference between 'gift' and 'present'? They seem interchangable, aren't they?

    Thanks

    Re: gift and present

I know there has been at least one long thread on this already, but my searching skills are not great. I hope someone who is better at searching for existing threads will come along and provide you with the link.

Yes, in many, many circumstances, as a noun, they are the same.

The thread contained discussions about situations in which they are not quite the same.

    Re: gift and present

    Hi there,
    I think this one:

    Your Majesty,

It will be a great honour to be able to present to you in person, on behalf of [name of centre], a Chinese poem written out by one of our great calligraphers.

This is the English translation of the poem:

We very much hope that you will accept this gift, and wish you blessings and wisdom.

    Your humble servant,

    name

No, the thread I'm referring to went on for a few pages and was many months in the past. I'll try to find it.

    Edit: Here's one: https://www.usingenglish.com/forum/a...sent-gift.html
