help me with the sentence please! thanks!

1)America's economy has stalled as the building bust deepens and consumers cope with the triple whammy of falling house prices, tighter credit and dearer oil.
    What is "building bust"?
2)America has need of idealism and courage.....
Why does the writer use has need of? Does it sound more formal or anything?

    thanks a lot!!!!!

I think "building bust" here means the serious failure.

"need of ": need plays a role of a noun here, I think it is formal.
