    What preposition is used?

    Dear Friends,

I wonder what preposition is used with 'parameter' in the following:

Thomas Greene fails to specify the parameters under/along/? which his theory operates.

    Thankas a lot.

    P.

This is an excellent question. I think David has jumped the gun by giving an opinion on this sentence, and neglecting other possible meanings.
Does palinkasocsi want to know which parameters the theory will work for, or which parameters the theory is based on, for example.

    Re: What preposition is used?

    1. parameterr means guidelines
    2. I mean: what conditions must be satisfied, which parameters the theory is based on

    So, is 'within' ok here?

Thomas Greene fails to specify the parameters on which his theory is based.
If you want to refer to the parameters the theory is based on, that's what you'd write. "... the parameters within which the theory operates" is ambiguous, in my opinion.
