    Reported speech

"Let's go swimming. The water is very clean.", said Ellen.

How do I change this sentence into reported speech?
Which of the following is more common?
    1. Ellen suggested going swimming, saying that the water was very clean.
    2. Ellen suggested going swimming because the water was very clean.

    Thanks.

    Re: Reported speech

Both are correct, and either could be said. Neither is more common than the other.
