what's the meaning "off a soup" in the following sentence?

for each class he would arrive with a wheathered sheaf of notes which would read as enthusiastically as the instructions off a soup can

For each class he would arrive with a weathered sheaf of notes which he would read as enthusiastically as the instructions off [a soup can]

They are printed on the outside of the can which contains soup.

    so what is this meaning?
enthusiastically read the soup can instructions
the soup can instructions is normally wheathered?
focused on a state(wheathered)of that instructions
    or
people normally read that instructions before buying a soup can?

What the sentence is saying is that the person arrives in the class with a much word and tatty sheaf of notes [weathered sheaf of notes] , which he reads out with as much enthusiasm as he would read the instructions on a can of soup. That is, without much enthusiasm at all.
