    past perfect

    Hi

    1. We had met each other before
    2. I went to Africa in 1989. I had been there twice before.

Do I really have to use the past perfect tense in the examples above?
I used "before" so maybe the past perfect is not necessary?

    1. We met each other before.
    2. I went to Africa in 1989. I was there twice before.

    Thanks

    Re: past perfect

The past perfect is used when the narrator looks back on earlier action from a certain point in the past. So your sentencesare right:1. We had met each other before2. I went to Africa in 1989. I had been there twice before.

    Re: past perfect

Thanks for the answer, but I'm not sure you're right....... I suppose that past simple is also possible.
