    meaning of 'not at least'

    Hi fellow members

Over the months, the opposition's attacks on Najib, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister, have all petered out quickly as rhetoric can only go so far.
The case is, however, not over yet. On Nov 10, the two policemen charged will take the witness stand, and their testimony will be closely watched.

Much hinges on what they are going to say about Razak's instructions to them.

Suave and polished, Razak, 48, was one of Malaysia's best-known political analysts, not at least because of his close connection to Najib.

In 2002, it surfaced that Razak had won a RM540 million contract to provide services in relation to Malaysia's purchase of two French submarines. Najib was then the Defence Minister.

Razak's links to Najib quickly dragged the Deputy PM into the scandal.

Could you let me know what 'not at least' means?

    Many thanks in advance.

Re: meaning of 'not at least'

It's a typo for '... not least because of his close connection to Najib' (his connection was significant among the reasons - it was not the only reason, but it was not the least important one). In a different context 'not at least because...' would be possible, but it wouldn't make sense here.

    Thanks, Bob.

The typo caused me to doubt my ability to understand the newspaper report.

My English is already of low standard and the newspaper has just given me more problems.

Not at all - spotting typos is sometimes difficult even for a native speaker.
