    Question suffix-gate

Hello! There's an expression about "gate" which refers to the scandals of celebrities or big guns in Chinese. For example, MistressGate, if translated literally from Chinese to English, refers to the scandal about a famous married man has a mistress and the affair is exposed to the public. It's said the Chinese expression of gate is derived from US political term- Watergate.

Early this year, the press of the Mainland of China and Hong Kong has been dominated by the scandal of a flood explicit photos of a Hong Kong male star with a bevy of female actors. Chinese journalists had a Chinese expression about the drama -PhotoGate in their reports. And I happened to read the exact English word-PhotoGate in the Wallstreet Journal about this scandal.

My question is whether the suffix-gate which refers to a scandal is really understood, acceptable by native speakers and it is usual. For example, can I call recent BBC crisis "Prank CallGate"?

    Many thanks!

    Re: suffix-gate

    Hi thedaffodils

Theoretically you might, but it really only works best with a single prefix, such as Watergate, Mistressgate or Photogate.

    Regards
