    sheer seductive beauty?

    Hello Everyone,

    What does the underlined mean?

The Sydney Opera House showed us that anything is possible, and it demonstrated that sheer, seductive beauty for its own sake is nothing to be ashamed of, but everything to be proud of.

Can you give me its equivalent?

    Regards
    Sky

Without more context, it's impossible to know whether the word "seductive" has a sexual connotation; if the production at Sydney Opera House was Salome it could well have been.

In any case, something-about-the-production's beauty for its own sake (that is, just because it was beautiful - not because, for example - it was trying to be fashionable) was laudable. In the words of MGM's motto ars gratia artis.

The quote is about the Sydney Opera House itself; the building. I think Bob's missed the meaning. The SOH is a technological and (arguably) a stylistic masterpiece. Since the sails and the outer shells of glass etc. are not strictly necessary for an opera house to be functional, the beauty of the opera house was designed in "for it's own sake" - for the sake of beauty, not to make the acoustics better, etc. "Seductive" doesn't have to sexual. You can be attracted to a work of art, and be mesmerised by it.
If an object made you stop and stare at is, admiring its beauty, and being oblivious to everything else, that would rate as "sheer seductive beauty".
