    Re: modal verbs

    Dear Moniza:

    1. Smoking (is not allowed) (is forbidden) (is prohibited) in this house.
    2. Didn't you see the sign? You (may not) (must not) (may be fined if you) drive more than 30 miles (should this be 30 miles per hour?).
    3. Playing football (is prohibited) in this park.

I assume you are trying to express the idea of a prohibition. If not, there are many other possibilities for these sentences. (Smoking [is common] in this house, etc.)

    I hope this is helpful.

But she's saying she wants modal verbs.

    Re: modal verbs

Of course, you are correct. Perhaps I dreamed this, but I recall one earlier response which explained that these sentences were not appropriate for the use of modal verbs. I apologize if my post was equally inappropriate.

Ah don't worry. In any case, she's got an equally half-irrelevant answer from another posting of the thread, which she seems to be happy with. And of course, that's what important.

I'm not sure if I can use a single word for 1 and 3, but for 2 it is easy enough:

    2. Didn´t you see the sign? You (can/could/may/should/must) drive more than 30 miles (per hour).

    Revised 1 and 3:
    1. You (can/could/may etc) smoke in his house.
    3. He (can/could/may etc) play football in this park.

    Sorry, if this is cheating
