    The use of a hyphen

    Hello,
This my first thread for Usingenglish.com and I have a liitle problem, of which I hope to get somebody's help. I am abaout to correct an essay by a friend of mine. The sentence, I am talking is about, is:
"I took a one week long Spanish intensive course in La Paz to reach a more eloquent conversation level. "
I wonder, whether there must be hyphens in "one week long". I would suggest so, but I am not sure.

Yes, you're right. "One-week-long" should be hyphenated, as it is a compound modifier preceding a noun (Spanish intensive course). You should also use a hyphen in "Spanish-intensive course" for the same reason. The hyphen is used for compound modifiers before nouns to improve clarity. (I copyedit as well as teach ESL, so hyphens are one of my specialties!)

Re: The use of a hyphen

as to the compound adjectives, but why bother with the "-long"?

And the order of adjectives is rather strange. I'd expect 'a one-week intensive Spanish course'. (the "intensive" qualifies the course, not the sort of Spanish).
