    Under what conditions can clauses and sentences be reduced and elements elided?

    I suspect this is too broad a question to answer satisfactorily. There are times when brevity and concise writing is best [ instructions/ information providing/ reporting]; and times when it is permissible to be flowery or verbose.

    What situations have you in mind?

    What about these example sentences:

    1. The post office delivers letters in the morning and the express service
    packages in the afternoon.
    2. The curtains donít match the walls and the curtains donít match the
    furniture..
    3. A: You leaving early?
    4. Yes, at five.
    5. A: Found a nice flat yet?
    6. B: *No, I couldnít afford.

    8. When visiting friends, you should offer them a suitable gift
