Question What's the word when someone tries to be cool but is unsuccessful?

What's the word when someone tries to be cool or tries to portray "coolness" but is unsuccessful?

    Not a teacher.

Oh wow. There are so many ways to describe this kind of person. How profane do you want it?

Usually, we would use any number of our colorful swear words, or a new combination of swear words, to make fun of this guy. Or we are very sarcastic about it. Let me think of some clean ways to say this:

You can simply call them a "failure"

They are "too big for their britches" (not really common here, but it can be used)

Sarcastically say "Oh yeah. You're cool." even if you aren't talking to the person. This is the one I use, but you need to hear it vocalized to really get all the sarcasm.

Sarcastically say "He's slick." or "You're slick" if you are talking to them.

    "Jack-ass"

    "Jerk"

    "Poser"

We don't really have a specific word for people like this, but they are certainly not scarce around here. Maybe the Brits have a more specific word or phrase for that.

Those are some great answers thedeebo. I'll remember them!

I was actually looking more for the word that describes the ACT of trying to seem cool but being unsuccessful, rather than a word for describing the person who does it.

Sorry, it's hard to explain. Do you understand what I'm getting at?

I understand, but I don't think there are any words that just describe the act just as there aren't any words to specifically describe the person. I guess "posing" would be one word that come close.

    Pretentious is one of them.

Not really. Pretentious means 'attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.' That's more of a 'show-off'.

Someone 'cool' ( or trying to be) is 'fashionably attractive or impressive', and this has been expanded to mean 'laid back, relaxed, not freaked out, knows what's going on and is popular because of these personal attributes/behaviours.'
