    Tenses following "until"

    Hello everybody,

I'm often perplexed with the nuance between the usage of the simple present tense and the present perfect tense after the word "until" in time clauses. I think that the use of the simple present tense is a regular option but I'd like to know when the use of the present perfect tense is appropriate and for what reasons. Is one or the other tense in this specific usage more charateristic of formal or informal speech respectively ? And also why the use of the simple past tense would be incorrect continuation after "until" . Here are the examples :

" We will not stop until we finish. "

    or

" We will not stop untill we have finished. "

    and why not

" We will not stop untill we finished"

    Thanks for your help

    Best regards

    Re: Tenses following "until"

You can use both, but the present perfect lays greater emphasis on completing whatever it is before stopping. The present perfect and simple present are both present tense forms. Perfect is an aspect so you're not changing the tense, though the present perfect is often labelled a tense, while your version with the simple past changes the tense and doesn't fit there for a future reference.
