    Talking about the height...

    Hi again,

Are there certain situations where itís more common to express height a certain way?

    1.I am 1 meter 56 (I am a meter fifty six).
2.I am one point fifty six meter.

Which one is most common? Is there a certain way to express height depending on the situation, the context?

"I am one meter and 56 centimetres tall."

Maybe its different in the UK, but I know I would use the "and" in the US.

It is not regarded as necessary in the UK. An elision is normal in this kind of statement.

    I am 5 feet 6 inches tall.
He is 2 metres one centimetre tall.

Perhaps we need a Canadian view on this.

    Re: Talking about the height...

Here, we would say "I'm 156 cm tall".
This is invariable for metric. Occasionally 5 foot 2 might be mentioned since older people still think that way.
News reports, police reports etc. generally say "The suspect is described as being 180 cm, or 6'4"

    (calculations not accurate).

Thank you for all your replies.

So what about saying: "one point 56 meter"?

Is it sometimes acceptable to talk that way?

Well, sure, if you like being corrected. You could even give your height in cubits. But the rest of the English speaking world is telling you they don't refer to their height that way.

Sometimes even I told people ( in U.S.) I was 161 cms tall, they stopped talking and did calcultaing instead. : ))) Later I had to tell them I was 5 feet 2 inches.

    Re: Talking about the height...

    Thanks!

Actually, I also said to my student that it wasn't correct. That's what I thought in the first place, I just wanted to make sure.

Only she heard it read from a foreigner in one of her tapes so...

    Anyway, thanks!
