what does it mean? and some grammar

tape recorders should have 2 inputs for microphones, or, alternatively an adapter can be used.( whats the role of adapter)

what is the difference betwen clip-on and omnidirectional microphones???

what is the difference between above and on top of ?

which verbs could and could not use the dative alternation structure?

e.g . I gave books to my friend. Vs. I gave my friend book.
I suggested a plan for her BUT * I suggested her a plan. (why this is wrong?

Q: What is the difference between "above" and "on top of"?
A: Something that is above something is not necessarily touching the thing below it, but something that is on top of something is touching the thing below it.

"I gave books to my friend" or "I gave my friend a book"

"I suggested a plan for her" or "I suggested a plan to her"
