Question understanding usage and grammer in the bible

What is the part of speech for the word first in these sentences? I am trying to see if it is merely numeric or if can imply other interpreptations of first.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. (KJV)

For an angel of the Lord went down at appointed seasons into the pool and moved and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was cured of whatever disease with which he was afflicted. (Amplified)

Re: understanding usage and grammer in the bible

The only way I can think of it is that the first person to do so was cured.
