    purpose

    Which of the following are correct:

    1-He was their man to open the safe.
    2-He was their man for opening the safe.
    (MEANING: He was the man they had in their group whose task was opening the safe.)


    3-This was their gun to shoot you.
    4-This was their gun for shooting you.
    (MEANING: This was the gun they had for the purpose of shooting you.)

    Either could be used.


    3-This was their gun to shoot you.
    4-This was their gun for shooting you. Though even that is not quite right. "This was the gun they had in order to shoot you".

    (MEANING: This was the gun they had for the purpose of shooting you.)

    2-This is the key they had to open the main door.
    3-This is the key they had in order to open the main door.
